Stepping into a courtroom can be a daunting task. When you have important decisions at hand that will affect your life and your family’s lives, you want to be well prepared. Whether you are attending a preliminary hearing or working with an experienced family law attorney, there are a few tips you can follow to make sure your family court visit is as productive as possible.

Stay organized. With court, you need to present the evidence and be prepared to show any documents that may pertain to your case. Keeping these items in one central location is key. You may use an accordion folder, a binder, or even a briefcase, either way, be sure that your documents are well labeled and easily accessible. Presentation in the courtroom is everything and having to spend time searching for a document, when all eyes are on you, can be frustrating. It is always good practice to check with your family law attorney to see what items they want you to bring.

Stay focused. Dealing with a family law issue can be stressful. After all, you know what is best for your family and you may have the desired outcome in mind. When you’re dealing with a hostile spouse or challenging family members for over estate divisions, emotions can run hot. Be sure to remind yourself often to stay focused on the task at hand and to remain composed throughout the entire process. This is where being mindful of your body will play a critical role. It is okay if you find that you need a moment to regroup, take the space you need to ensure that you can return focused on a positive outcome.

Stay respectful. When you are in the midst of a family law proceeding, it can seem like the judge is not on your side. It is important to recognize that they are humans too and whenever possible, try to consider the judge’s perspective. This is where partnering with an experienced and reputable family law attorney can be key. A well-versed attorney should have a good understanding of the judge’s leanings and will be able to advocate for you to get a judge that may be more sensitive to your situation. Either way, doing your own research to learn more about the judge(s) who may be overseeing your case. This can help you to determine what materials you may want to prepare to present or how you may structure your arguments to prove your point.
